Out of date / under construction web pages

How many times have you been to a website that is out of date? You may have come across many out of date pages – we’ve recently seen web pages still referring to last year’s upcoming Christmas service!

With ever hectic schedules and time pressures it can be so easy to forget about updating a particular page on the site.

A great way to ensure that your website is always up to date is to make a note in your diary when to review your site. If you are putting time sensitive material on your site such as an upcoming 10 week Alpha course then make a note in your diary to review the web page near the end of the course. Then you will be able to come back and either update or delete the page.

Under Construction Pages
Are you familiar with the under construction pages?
They usually come with an animated image of a builder and an ‘Under construction’ sign. Quite often these pages are going to be eternally under construction! This reflects badly on the site, particularly if a visitor keeps checking back to see if the page is updated. If one web page is out of date then the visitor may think the rest of the site could be untrustworthy for its accuracy.

At Church Edit we recommend that pages are not created unless you actually have the content for that page. If you know that the content is DEFINITELY going to be ready by a certain date, then it may be appropriate to create the page and put ‘This page will be updated by XX XXXX’, as this will cause visitors to come back to the site when they know the new content will be there. Of course if you do this, then you must make sure that the page is updated by that date!
